Procrastination affects us all at one time or another. We tend to put off the things that we don’t want to do. We procrastinate even when we know deep down that doing that important task will lead to us getting what it is that we truly desire.
Generally speaking the root of procrastination is a combination of fear and weak desire.
Get Clarity- Step one in ridding yourself of procrastination is to get clear on what it is that you desire. When you know exactly what you want you gain your first measure of power over procrastination.
Take that desire and make it a burning obsession. Dwell on it. Turn it into something that is of the utmost importance to you. Make it a “have to have” thing in your life. Get fired up about getting it.
Make a Plan- Next you want to make a plan for obtaining what you want. Map out a plan that will direct you to whatever it is that you desire.
Do your best to take into consideration the obstacles and tasks that stand between you and your desired destination. Plan the steps that you intend to take to get from where you are to where you want to be.
Be Realistic- You don’t have to be perfect. Don’t fear making mistakes. Just do what you can do. Learn what you need to learn. Do not get upset or dejected when you fail. Do not fear failure. If you learn from your failure then failure can actually make you stronger and smarter.
Just Get Started- Next just have to start. When you begin to take action you will notice that fear gradually dissipates. The more that you take action the more energy and confidence you’ll gain.
You may not see the results that you desire early on but you will experience growth. As you work your plan consistently by taking action you will find yourself moving steadily towards your goals.
Enjoy the Journey- Continue to look at doing the things that you don’t want to do as necessary actions. When you do these task long enough to see positive results then you will develop an appreciation for the work. You will come to understand the correlation between doing the necessary work and obtaining the desired results.
When you are taking the correct actions towards obtaining your desired goals you should be happy that you are in the hunt and not sitting on the couch feeling guilty about not doing what you know you should be doing.
Once you get started and continue moving towards your goals you will find that you are no longer a spectator. You’ll realize that are now in the game and you are actually making things happen.
