After setting your goals the challenge has just began. You are susceptible certain pitfalls that can cause you to miss your goal entirely. Here are 3 common mistakes that you need to avoid:

Not Writing Them Down. Not writing your goals down leads to you getting off track. So often we don’t really fail to hit our goal we simply forget what the goal is and then we move on to something else.

Solution: Write your goal on cards and place them in places where you will see them regularly during your day. This helps to keep them on your mind. Goal cards keep you focused on what you are trying to achieve.

Looking at Failure as Permanent. Failure is devastating. After you miss hitting your goals you are disappointed. This feeling can lead to discouragement. You begin to associate goal setting with failure and you feel like it is no use trying because you have failed so many times before.

Solution: Do not look at failure as final. You have another chance to get it right. As long as you keep trying you have chance to eventually succeed. Each time you fail learn something from the failure and use that valuable experience in your next attempt at setting and hitting goals.

Telling the Wrong People. When you tell negative people what you are planning to do you invite criticism and teasing. They spew their negativity on you to the point where you don’t feel inspired anymore. You become frustrated and defeated because of their constant badgering of you.

Solution: Don’t tell anyone about your goals unless you feel certain that they will encourage and help you. Keep your goals to yourself. Protect yourself by telling no one.

Goal setting can help you achieve high levels of success throughout your lifetime. However in order to hit your goals and succeed in realizing your dreams you will need discipline. Here are 3 reasons why you cannot succeed with out discipline.

Procrastination- You postpone your success when you put off doing the work habits that help you accomplish your goals. Enjoying the benefits of goal achievement becomes a distant pipe dream. Waiting for the right time to begin is a common mistake that many people make.

Solution: When you know what needs to be done discipline yourself to do it now. Get started today. Work everyday. Make action a habit and you will move further along than you could ever imagine. You will learn what you need to learn. You will gain confidence. And you will see positive results from your efforts. Most importantly you will be moving forward rather than standing still.

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”~ Jim Rohn

Distraction-Without discipline it is impossible to zero in on the things that really matter to you. You are bombarded daily with messages and request which scatter your attention in many directions. You cannot hit a goal that you do not set and you cannot achieve a goal which you do not discipline yourself to single-mindedly focus on.

Solution:Focus on what you want. Don’t allow anything or anyone to take your attention off of the goals that you have set for yourself. Opportunities will present themselves to you, but you have to be focused in order to be aware of them. When you are focused on your goals you will experience serendipity. These are moments when good things happen to you as a result of your focus being in the right place as you work towards making your dreams come true. As you go through your day you will begin to feel like you are simply connecting the dots as you proceed towards your desired objective.

Setting goals is sometimes hard to do. We might struggle with them. It might mean giving up some things that we might feel we aren’t just yet ready to give up. It might mean that we have to step up to the plate more. Whatever it might mean, some people find goal setting as a task at hand. Yet, maybe you don’t know all the good things about goal setting. So, here are a few that are just for you.

Sense Of Pride

One of those things is that as you accomplish your goals, you get a sense of pride. You have done great things. You have made it this far. That is something that you have wanted to do and you can see yourself going somewhere. You can then tell yourself to keep up the good work. Now, how do you like that?

Accomplishment

Then there is the fact that each goal means that you have accomplished something. We set milestones when we set goals. These might be things that if we tried to conquer them as a whole, we might not have any luck at all. When that’s the case, you will find that goal setting takes away some of that frustration we might feel as we try to do something.

For some of us, it’s the motivation that we need. We have been wanting to do something, but we just don’t know how to do it. When we break the job down then we can see what needs to be done and we can see how long we feel it might take us. Then the task at hand doesn’t look too big.

Hope and Dreams

Last of all, setting goals gives us something to look forward to. It gives us something to aim for. Many of us live a mundane life, we get bored too easy. Yet, when we do something in terms of goals, we feel that we are doing something constructive. That is something that we need to feel in life.

So, as you can see, goal setting has it’s purpose. Just as we look for a purpose in anything we do, this too has a purpose as well.

By Anthony D Carter

Goal setting will play a vital part in your success. So it stands to reason that you want to start on a proper foundation. When it is done effectively goal setting involves four practical steps.

List Your Dreams

Write down whatever it is that you want to do. List all of your dreams. Whether it is writing the next great American novel, running a mile in five minutes or falling in love, you need to write it all down. You want keep that list of dreams in front of you so that you can actually look at it and build a plan around each item on that list.

Turn Your Dreams Into Goals

Break your dreams down into real, practical goals. This is best done by simply looking at your dream and thinking of what that really, literally means. So “being rich” means “having X amount of money, total”. Falling in love means “marrying the girl of your dreams”, etc. Dreams are broad and abstract. Whereas goals are literal and practical.

This plays to your advantage. Because with some good planning and forethought you can set the process on autopilot. You want to make a plan which includes the daily weekly and monthly work habits that are necessary to hit your goals. After you have it all mapped out then you simply set out to make it happen. You do not need to put much further thought into what needs to be done. You will do your work on a consistent basis, while occasionally checking your results for feedback to determine if you need to make any adjustments.

Break Them Down

Take your long term goal and break it down into chapters or a series of short term goals. For example, if you want to make that feature film, it would go like this: Learn about screenplay structure, make some short films to practice, write a script, get a budget, and finally, start filming. See, every goal, no matter how far off it seems, can be broken down into smaller, practical steps.

Put In The Work!

Just do it! You don’t want go through life just wishing, dreaming and hoping. Embrace the challenge. No matter what your goals are, there is certainly something that you can do RIGHT NOW to start to work towards them. If you want to write a novel, you can write the first page right now. If you want to start a business, you can begin earning your start-up money with a smaller business. Selling items on auction sites can give you some instant cash. So get started. The key to hitting your goals lie in your determination to just start from where you are and continue moving forward daily.

Goals determine your level of success. People who have goals lead more successful lives and achieve more than people who have none. However, for some of us the process of setting goals seem to be too complicated to bother with. That doesn’t have to be the case. When setting goals use this simple process and you will have your goals set in one hour or less.

Step one- Write down your values. You want to write down the things that matter the most to you. We all have our own list of values that we possess. Honesty, integrity, wealth, relationships, etc. Write down all of the ones that are important to you.

Step two- Write down a list of your life time goals. This is a dream building exercise. Let yourself go. What would you do, be, or have if money was not a limiting factor. In other words, if you could afford it, where would you go, what would you do, what kind of person would you become? Write down the type of house that you would live in. List the make and model car that you would drive. Write down which career you would pursue. Add to your list the places that you would travel to. Put down your desired body weight. These are just examples and ideas of the types of things that you can have as lifetime goals. Write your own list down on paper and do not limit yourself.

Step three- On another sheet of paper write down a list of things that you would do if you only had six months to live. Some people call this the “bucket list” because it refers to all of the things that you would like to do before you kick the bucket. This is a very serious exercise because we never know how long we have to live. It may be six months or it may be longer. We never really know how long, but most of us act as if we are going to live forever.

This exercise forces you to bring the things that matter most to you to the forefront of your mind. This list of things that you would do if you only had six months to live will contain goals that are more dear to you. These goals will probably differ from the goals that you listed in your lifetime goals. In this step you will find that with the change in perspective comes a more refined list. You have become more clearly focused on what really matters to you.

Step four- Write down on another blank sheet of paper your goals for the next year of your life. The first three steps that you completed have helped to make this step easier. This exercise helps to clarify what is important to you and it brings to the surface what you are most passionate about. In this step you should be able to come up with a good set of goals very easily. This four step process only takes an hour or less to do, but once you are done you will be clear on your major objectives. Now you have a set of goals that you can begin to focus on.

3- Accept Support – There are people who can help you and there are people who can hurt you. The people who can hurt you are easy to identify. They are the ones who always put you down or express doubt that you can accomplish anything of significance. Avoid these people like the plague. Better yet, drop them like a bad habit. Do not spend time with them if you can help it.

You want to be around the other type of people. Perhaps there is an uncle, aunt, or close friend who has always believed in you. Or maybe there is someone that you trust who will give you honest feedback when you need it. Surround yourself with as many supportive people as possible. Actually if you only have one good friend who supports you the that is enough. Tell them what attempting to do. They will be happy to hear that you are striving to better yourself. They will most certainly offer to help you.

4- Maintain Balance – You should have goals in several areas of your life. You need financial goals, spiritual goals, relationship goals, personal goals, health(fitness) goals and business goals. In order to hit any of your goals you will need to endure. To maintain endurance you’ll need balance. You cannot last as long as is needed if you neglect the other areas of your life in order to be successful with one goal. When going after your goal in one area of your life be mindful of the other areas and give them some of your attention as well.

5 – Persist – Once you have the right goal and set about hitting it, never give up. So often the success that you want awaits you only one step away from your quitting. Do not quit. Stick with it. Even when it seems like you are failing you are actually succeeding. Success is like that sometimes.

With every attempt that you make to accomplish your goal you are growing. You are becoming more skilled and you are gaining confidence. Over time you will get more efficient and thus work less to get greater results. But, because you are in the heat of battle you may not notice all of these positive changes. Eventually they will tip the scale in your favor and culminate with you roaring past the finish line and achieving your objective.

Goals provide you with a valuable asset for increased motivation. But if you set them incorrectly they can lead to frustration and overwhelm. Your goals will only help you if you put some forethought into them. Here are 5 components of a good goal setting program.

1-Write Your Goals Down - Your goals become tangible when you write them down. This is a very important step that even moderately successful people neglect to do. When you write your goals down you automatically put yourself into the company of the top ten percent of achievers in the world.

A written goal provides you with direction and focus. When you have identified the target you are more apt to hit it. Your goals guide your daily activities. Without a written goal you wonder from one urgent activity to the next. You feel as though you are just spinning your wheels and not getting anywhere. Write your goals down and give your mind a target to hit and a predetermined direction to go towards.

2-Develop A Plan of Action – Goals should have plans which lead to their attainment. Because your goals are the target that you are striving to hit, they act as a compass which directs your every move. If you make step by step plans, in advance, which guide you to your desired objectives then you will protect yourself from distractions and procrastination. You will also eliminate confusion. It is easier to follow a plan than it is to wonder through life haphazardly flying by the seat of your pants. A plan helps you to stay grounded and steady as you progress towards the achievement of your goal.

With goal setting your mindset determines whether you experience failure or defeat. Here are three keys which will help you to succeed with goal setting.

1)Don’t settle for small ambitions. It takes just as much energy to hit a small goal as it does to hit a big one. When you set small goals and you make small plans you invite mediocrity into your life. Even if you hit the weak goal you will not experience lasting satisfaction from your accomplishment.

The bigger the goal, then the more meaning it will have for you. You become filled with inspiration when you have a big dream. This in turn motivates you to do what it takes to hit your goal. Weak ambitions yield weak results.

2)Don’t get off track. You must avoid distractions. There will always be situations and circumstances which have the potential to pull your attention away from your main objective. It is difficult to split our focus between daily responsibilities and remembering to do the work associated with our goals. However, when you establish routines then you take the thinking out of the equation.

It is best to develop positive daily habits. Make these tasks non-negotiable. Never let yourself off of the hook. Find a way to meet your objectives on a consistent basis. This gives you momentum. Being a slave to your good habits will keep you on track towards hitting your goals.

3)Don’t give up. Persistence is vital. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day and your goals will not be accomplished overnight either. One of the biggest challenges to successfully hitting your goals is remaining diligent after you miss a deadline.

The big thing that we usually overlook is our inability to foresee every obstacle or delay that we will face on the path to where we want to go. No matter how thorough we are in our planning there will always be something beyond our control that we cannot account for.

Give it your best shot. If you miss your original deadline simply start again with a new deadline. The key to success with goal setting lies in your ability to bounce back from disappointments. Keep your mind on what you want and continue to work towards obtaining it. You will succeed if you don’t quit

Waiting. Waiting until the perfect time is a big motivation killer. If you continue to wait until the perfect time you will be disappointed because it will never come. Opportunities will continue to pass you by. Eventually you will give up on your dream and goals altogether.

Solution: There is no perfect time in the future to start. The time to start is right now. Get going even if you are not sure what to do. You can adjust along the way. Once you began opportunities will began to become apparent to you.

Influence. The negative influences of other people will kill your enthusiasm, belief and initiative. If you allow it, negative people will talk you out of pursuing your dream. If seems the very people who have never really accomplished anything themselves are the ones who are the most vocal with reasons why you cannot accomplish your goals.

Solution: Do not share your aspirations with everyone. People should earn your trust. If they have supported you in the past then they qualify. You want to get encouragement support and honest feedback. So, always give careful consideration to who you share your plans with. When you have the right people in your corner you will be motivated to accomplish lofty objectives.

Fear. Fear of failure leads to inaction and hesitation. When you allow fear to gain a foothold in your decision making process you will severely limit your chances for success. We are not motivated when we are too nervous to try.

Solution: Even when you feel the fear take action anyway. You will find that the more you take action despite fear then the easier it will be to overcome fear. Each time you fight through fear it will lose it’s power over you.

Comfort Zone. Your insistence on remaining in your comfort zone destroys your initiative and drive. Your comfort zone is a deceptive killer of dreams. While doing what comes easy on a daily basis, you are allowing your aspirations to fade away into distant memories. Over time your dreams will cease to be important to you. You will lose your desire for them in favor of staying comfortable.

Solution: Stretch yourself. Widen your comfort zone. Do activities and task which force you to get better. As you improve your skills you will improve your results. As you get more and more of the desired results that you want then the stronger your motivation will be to continue to stretch yourself. You will come to realize that the rewards lie on the outside of your comfort zone.

Weak Motives. Weak motives yield weak and inconsistent results. If you do not truly desire what you are working to have then will discover that you cannot maintain steady motivation. You will start, slow down and then stop. You will not be able to pay the price to hit the goal that you have set for yourself. Weak motives lead to quitting.

Solution: Always set goals that matter greatly to you. You gain high degrees of motivation from your strong desire for outcomes that are important to you. The size of your dream determines the level of your motivation. Be sure that your reason is worth the sacrifice and work that you will have to put out in order to obtain what you want. When your motive is strong then your motivation is high.

Not Writing. Goals that are not written tend to get forgotten. In the normal day to day activities our goals get lost. Because we don’t have them written down we don’t see them enough to impress them upon our thoughts. Out of sight out of mind.

Solution: Write your goals down. Something miraculous happens when you do. Writing your goals down makes the whole goal setting process more legitimate. It gives you a set of objectives that you can review on a regular basis. When you can actually see your goals written out you are better able to keep your attention centered on them.

Misplaced Focus. When you focus on the problems more than you focus on your objectives you are doomed to eventually fail. Failure springs from confusion and doubt. You set yourself up to receive both of these when you allow the thoughts of problems and obstacles to fill your mind. You will seem to continue getting bombarded with problems and the more attention you give them the more they will grow in importance to you. Eventually your goal ceases to matter. It loses it’s prominence in your life because of your preoccupation with worrying about your problems.

Solution: Center your attention on hitting your goals. Make your achieving your goals more important than continually fretting over situations that you cannot control. If some tasks requires your attention, handle it and quickly pick up where you left off with your goal. Never let fear and doubt control you. Always work through your fear. As you do it will lose it’s influence on you. Focus instead on what you want. Keep your attention on what you want to happen and off of what you don’t want to happen.

Impersonal. A goal that someone gives you is not the same as having your own goal. Going after a goal simply because someone else is going after that goal doesn’t offer you the same fulfillment that striving to hit your own does. If your goal is not your own goal you will have a hard time accomplishing it. And even if you do accomplish it you will not be satisfied. Pursuing a goal that is not your own will cause you to waste large amounts of time and effort.

Solution: Set your own goals. And set them for your own reasons. You can model your aspirations after someone else, but only do so if you sincerely want what they have. A challenging goal will require that you expend a great deal of energy. It is wise to decide in advance that you are aimed at an objective that is worth the effort that you are about to put forth.
